Bird flies in Wednesday

Storm guard Sue Bird will arrive Wednesday, but the team cancelled practice — resting from a week of two-a-day sessions — so Bird will not hit the court for Seattle until Thursday. The team’s first exhibition game is Sunday against New York at KeyArena.
Bird has been in Russia, playing her second season with the Moscow Dynamo. Her team, which includes WNBA players Diana Taurasi (Phoenix) and former Storm center Kamila Vodichkova (Phoenix), swept Moscow Spartak, with recently retired WNBA post player Natalie Williams (Indiana).
Bird had some odd numbers overseas, explaining in an interview during the draft that her first coach didn’t want her to shoot. He was ultimately fired and the second coach had her playing a similar game that she does with the Storm, finishing the season averaging 5.5 points, 4 rebounds and 4.1 assists.
“Yeah, my friends all ask what’s up with my stats,” said Bird via telephone from Boston in April.
Also arriving Wednesday will be Iziane Castro Marques, who is waiting for her visa from Brazil. The news perked up coach Anne Donovan, who had returning starter Janell Burse (arm) and reserve Simone Edwards in camp for the first time today.
