Historic repeat

The last time the Storm played Los Angeles in the playoffs they were not only the No. 4 seed but had beaten the Sparks 2-1 during the regular season. But Los Angeles swept Seattle 2-0 in the best-of-three opening round.
Coincidentally the same is true this summer, with Seattle again being the No. 4 seed having defeated Los Angeles 2-1 during the season.
That’s where the similarities stop for Storm All-Star Sue Bird, who was a rookie when she and Lauren Jackson led Seattle to their postseason debut in 2002.
“I learned my first year that [Sparks center] Lisa Leslie can go from here to here come playoff time,” said Bird, raising her hand up a foot to illustrate Leslie’s increase in playoff intensity. “It’s light years [different from 2002]. We were definitely the underdogs then. I don’t think anybody on our roster had been to the playoffs and we were facing the defending champion. They [Los Angeles] were just in some other world in that playoff series. I’m sure they’ll do the same [this summer], but we’re prepared for that.”
Each team only has two players remaining from the 2002 series
