Lovin’ it

Words I’ve never heard Storm coach Anne Donovan say after four days of training camp: “What I’m seeing, I love.”
Donovan “loves” something already? I can’t believe it. Normally the coach is fussy until Sue Bird walks through the training-camp doors. But apparently the practices with six healthy bodies after Yolanda Paige (knee) and Tye’sha Fluker (ankle) suffered injuries are looking good.
Donovan seems to have cut the sessions extremely short compared to past raining camps in her five-year stint with the organization, so media haven’t seen much.
I can say that Brazilian Iziane Castro Marques looks good. Her body appears stronger, and she’s cutting more to the basket and finishing. Plus she’s staying for extended work with assistant coach Heidi VanDerveer.
But it’s the defense that I’m concerned about. Castro Marques and rookie Katie Gearlds still have to defend the likes of Tamika Catchings and Swin Cash, and I just don’t see it right now.
Anyway, one thing making Donovan queasy is her roster limitations. She’s still saying the team is only going to carry 11, despite a league allowance of 13, due to the salary cap.
“Eleven makes me feel uncomfortable from a body’s standpoint,” said Donovan, who weathered a rash of injuries last season before being bumped from the opening round of the playoffs by Los Angeles.
