Storm forward Barbara Turner must be feeling the heat across the ocean. She’s leading her team through the finals in Turkey, but can’t stand not being in the Storm’s training camp, according to Wendy Palmer, who spoke with Turner this morning.
It could be another camp ploy by coach Anne Donovan, but Turner is in the midst of a battle with free agent Shyra Ely for the reserve small forward role, although both can also play in the post.
Ely is looking good, too. After just over a week of camp, I’m leaning toward Ely being on my final roster simply because of her height (6 feet 2) and improved mid-range game. Add her nastiness inside from playing power forward at Tennessee and you’ve got a solid player. Donovan thinks she’s too quiet, though, and is just starting to come out of her shell.
Word from a couple of Storm players in camp is that Turner looks good, too. I don’t know how she could get more muscular, but apparently she did and her shot is on point. Turner didn’t play in more competitive leagues overseas in Israel and Turkey and Storm coach Anne Donovan isn’t happy the second-year player didn’t report on time, but if reports are accurate, Turner’s play could fade previous grievances.
Anyway, my early roster breaks down like this:
PG: Sue Bird/Tanisha Wright
SG: Betty Lennox
SF: Iziane Castro Marques/Katie Gearlds/Shyra Ely
PF: Lauren Jackson/Wendy Palmer
C: Janell Burse/Ashley Robinson/Tye’sha Fluker
I can’t imagine Donovan not having three backup posts since Jackson, Burse, and Palmer still have lingering injuries and Robinson and Fluker offer different positives off the bench. Fluker is a banger, according to Donovan, while Robinson continues to develop into an impressive rebounder/shot blocker with shooting capabilities. Fluker also has a nice touch with the ball.
As for the perimeter, all of the players can play any of the positions except for maybe Castro Marques at PG (scary) and Lennox at SF (she’d probably get sizzled). Otherwise it seems like an improvement from last season and should be competitive in the WNBA.
Let’s see if I’m right…
