Tanisha Wright said the tidbit was breaking news to her, but moments earlier after practice Storm coach Anne Donovan said Wright solidified her position on the roster as the team’s backup point guard.
The position might have been hers by default anyway because Italian Francesca Zara was late in applying for her visa and was called up to play for her national team, so she will not report to Seattle this summer. The Storm does retain her rights and if Wright isn’t successful this season, the battle could be resumed.
So, forward Shyra Ely is the lone player contending for a spot. Donovan said she’s going to keep her five posts, improving drastically in that area with the play of Tye’sha Fluker and Ashley Robinson, and is only evaluating Ely against what Barbara Turner did for the team last season.
Turner’s team in Turkey won, pushing the series on to a decisive Game 6 on Saturday, and overseas organizations tend to hold onto the last check until the final game is played, so the Storm won’t see Turner until next week, if they’re lucky. Game 7 in Turkey is scheduled for Tuesday.
If Ely has a strong game against Sacramento on Friday, Turner will have to work double time to prove her worth.
Donovan brushed off a question about what Turner could do for another squad — especially since the Storm could use her defense. That’s the only thing that makes the Ely-for-Turner swap sketchy to me. Ely is more experienced, but neither has done anything spectacular based on regular-season stats to make the decision easy and both are in the same salary bracket.
Ely supposedly has highs and lows and who knows if all of the talk about Turner being better are true. Ely has had a sweet camp, though, and you can’t miss with either. You just don’t want to be wondering “what if” by mid-July.
