Traveling cake

Had to check eBay today to see if the birthday cupcake handed to Storm forward Lauren Jackson was listed. The team’s mascot presented her with the candle-topped treat at the open practice on Saturday and Jackson passed. After it traveled to everyone on the team, Doppler tossed it to the crowd where a little brown-haired girl caught the cake.
I don’t really condone selling athlete’s gum or other used junk anywhere, it’s just nasty. In this case, though, if it had been on eBay, at least that would mean the girl didn’t eat the cupcake. Gross.
The real party was that night at Aussie pub the Kangaroo & Kiwi near Green Lake. Jackson rented a stretch Hummer limo and rounded up friends and most of the team at the joint (rookie Katie Gearlds was in Indiana graduating from Purdue). In case you don’t live in Seattle and don’t see the oddity in this, the K&K is hardly Light nighclub in Las Vegas. It’s more Harley than Hummer.
“Who is the world rents a limo and takes it to the Kangaroo & Kiwi?” said Jackson with a burst of laughter. “Who does that but me? We had a riot!”
Jackson’s bubbly mood despite waking at 2:30 a.m. due to the time change from Russia was the norm at the Storm’s media day today. The atmosphere was actually the lightest it has ever been. Part of the reason is that four of the players — Jackson, Sue Bird, Janell Burse and Betty Lennox — have been together since winning a championship in 2004.
The other reason was Barbara Turner opting to miss the final game in her Turkish league to vie for a roster spot beginning with tonight’s closed practice.
I’ll have more on Turner’s decision in Tuesday’s Times. But as for Media Day, Turner was her usual hilarious self, taking jabs at Tanisha Wright’s horrible singing and providing clips of her favorite standup comedian, Mike Epps.
I would write what she said, but it only works in person. One visual that might come across is that Turner was in the locker room before the day, flexing to convince her teammates she’s bigger. They laughingly brushed her off, but she kept insisting they touch her muscles. Turner had a six-pack and was ripped last summer, so I can’t vouch for any more muscles being on her frame.
