Turner cut

The Storm waived forward Barbara Turner following practice Wednesday.
Turner, a 6-foot forward, was drafted with the 11th pick overall in 2006, but lost her roster spot to free agent Shyra Ely, who’s entering her third season. The roster now stands at 11, Storm coach Anne Donovan’s intended final lineup for the 2007 season.
Turner’s chances of returning to the Storm were slim because she missed the entire exhibition season due to being under contract to play through the postseason in Turkey. Her team in Istanbul advanced to the Finals, winning the title on Tuesday, but Turner felt she needed to return to Seattle instead of play in Game 7 in order to contend for her WNBA roster spot. But she made that decision Saturday, arriving in Seattle on Sunday.
Ely, who was cut by San Antonio before training camp opening, was signed by Seattle in April.
Turner had three practices with the team and despite knowing the system, she’s not as versatile Ely because of her size. Donovan said Turner can only play along the perimeter while Ely, who’s 6-2, can defend any position and play both forward positions without creating a mismatch.
I’ll have more on this in tomorrow’s Times.
