Name game

Perhaps Lisa Leslie just likes the name, that’s what Storm guard Sue Bird hopes, not wanting to think news that the Los Angeles star planning to name her baby Lauren, is any reflection on Bird’s Seattle mate, Lauren Jackson.
Jackson, however, was still stunned at the irony after practice today. A friend e-mailed her about the story this morning, asking if Jackson had seen it. The Australian didn’t know how to react, having had some heated battles with Leslie since the Aussie was 16.
Then there was that MVP quibble in 2003 when Jackson won, but Leslie said prior to the announcement that the MVP shouldn’t be a player not in the playoffs. The Storm missed the postseason that summer.
They’ve sort of quashed their on-court bickering at the All-Star game in New York last summer, Leslie saying Jackson cleaned up her “potty mouth.” But it’s not like Jackson is on the guest list for the baby shower or anything.
And for the record, if Jackson ever has children, she nodded her head “No” to the possibility of them being named Lisa or Leslie.
“I was like, ‘what the?'” Jackson said. “She must really like the name, it’s a nice name. But that’s really funny.”
More important is the fact that Leslie, who’s due in June, says she wants to return to play in August, which Storm coach Anne Donovan expected. If Leslie did, she could face Jackson in the Aug. 17 season-finale at KeyArena.
