Ties that bind

The ties between Phoenix and Seattle run deep. But do you know how deep?
Sure, you know that guards Diana Taurasi and Sue Bird played college hoops together. And that forwards Penny Taylor and Lauren Jackson play on the Australian national team. And that Mercury guard Belinda Snell is an Aussie, too.
But did you forget that Iziane Castro Marques played in Phoenix? What about how Storm center Ashley Robinson and Taurasi have been playing against each other since AAU? (And Robinson began her career with the Mercury.) Then there’s the fact that Storm reserve Tanisha Wright and Kelly Mazzante played college ball together at Penn State. Storm reserve Wendy Palmer was a teammate of Jen Derevjanik in Connecticut when the Sun lost to the Storm for the 2004 title. Seattle coach Anne Donovan drafted Phoenix guard Kelly Miller in 2001 while in Charlotte. Plus, Phoenix trainer Tamara Poole worked under former Storm coach Lin Dunn during Seattle’s inaugural season.
The whopper is that I used to babysit assistant coach Julie Brase, or at least she was Brase when I was trying to entertain her and her brother as kids. (Now it’s Brase-Hairgrove.) You may know of her grandfather, Arizona coach Lute Olson. My dad was one of his assistants and Brase’s dad was our dentist. A couple of times I had to watch over the troupes.
Yes, there are few secrets in this series.
