Switching to purple

Heard a lot of Storm fans are switching their allegiance to cheer for Sacramento coach Jenny Boucek in the Monarchs’ pivotal Game 3 today. Boucek is a former Storm assistant who keeps close ties with the team. Her mother has made dinners for players like Tanisha Wright and Ashley Robinson and attends games while Boucek has been a soundboard for players this summer.
The Storm returned from Phoenix today after the disappointing first-round series sweep that appeared to have All-Star Sue Bird in tears during the web airing of the postgame press conference. The expected televised version was canned in order to bring ESPN2 viewers the men’s FIBA World Championship.
Exit interviews aren’t scheduled until Wednesday, but media has been warned to check back for updates. All-Star Lauren Jackson could be awarded the MVP trophy this week, too, since her plans last week were to return to Australia to be with her family. (She learned of her paternal grandmother’s death on Aug. 10.) Other players have mentioned already having overseas contracts offered to them, so they may depart quickly for play elsewhere. Bird and Storm coach Anne Donovan must regroup for their Olympic qualifying tournament in Chile from Sept. 23-29.
