Checking in on Sacramento

The Storm plays their final road exhibition game against Sacramento tonight. The Monarchs will be without DeMya Walker, who re-injured her knee while playing overseas in Russia. Walker played on the same team as former Storm guard Betty Lennox, who described the ordeal as horrific. Lennox, already feeling soreness in her knees, even contemplated not playing anymore out of fear of suffering a similar injury. Lennox is undecided about her return home to join the Atlanta training camp.
Play is more physical overseas, but Walker also was rehabilitating to make a return. She’s the second player to suffer a setback during training camp. Minnesota announced it would be without PG Lindsey Harding indefinitely.
The injuries and announcement that Aussie F Penny Taylor will not be returning to help Phoenix defend its championship until after the Olympic break appears to put the Storm in good position early. Not that Cappie Pondexter and Diana Taurasi are slouches, but, without having seeing a game, San Antonio looks to be the strongest contender out West to advance to the Finals. But, again, it’s so early I hate to even write that sentence.
And FYI, checked to be sure Lauren Jackson didn’t change her mind about returning before the Olympic break. The Storm says still she will only miss a total of five games to fulfill her Olympics obligations.
As for the exhibition game, here’s a look inside the Monarchs camp. They’re of course making a big deal about Storm C Yolanda Griffith’s return. The team is really in need inside now without Walker and Griffith gone. Perhaps Storm C Janell Burse should have swapped places and started in Sacramento instead of battling for the slot in Seattle?
