Roster decided?

The Storm is off today, but they gave the media a treat before leaving practice on Tuesday — the coveted media guide. There will be more on this league-wide later, but it was real interesting to flip to page 156 and see a 12-player roster staring back. Seems the roster is set with SG Roneeka Hodges, PG Doneeka Lewis, and G Tanisha Wright pictured with the expected players to be on the roster in G/F Katie Gearlds, trade pick-up Swin Cash, F Shyra Ely, etc.
In past years, the team has waited until the last moment to submit player pages, only included returning Storm players, or featured everyone at camp. The Storm’s public relations staff told reporters it was a “best-guess estimate.” And draft picks Kimberly Beck and Allie Quigley are featured on page 54.
Their exclusion on page 156 is not that surprising given that Hodges and Lewis have the experience to look better than the rookies in camp. From Day 1, you got the sense that the rookies were there to fill space because so many of the Storm’s key players were and still are overseas playing. Plus, you never know what you may find — like whoever picks up some of the rookies, if cut – will probably find a gem.
While coach Brian Agler has highlighted a few of the newcomers when asked, the most impressive in camp has been Ely, who was coached by Agler in San Antonino. Her mood changed the day he was hired in January and you can tell she’s worked hard this past offseason to return in better form. It’s a good thing with Janell Burse not returning. Although I don’t think it’s a good season-long strategy because Ely is undersized at 6-foot-2, she’s going to have to help inside. F Lauren Jackson may also be shifted to center to add to the rotation inside. And hopefully vet Yolanda Griffith stays healthy for a season-long start. The Storm could also still pick-up a player off the waiver wire.
Like last season, if the media guide is offered for purchase and you’re into stats, I’d say buy it. It’s full of classic, colorful photos and interesting facts. It’ll just be interesting to see if PR is correct on its final roster pick.
