Nike drops Gearlds

You won’t see Storm F/G Katie Gearlds sporting the Nike swoosh tonight at the team’s opener against Chicago. In some Candace Parker aftershock, KG said Nike dropped her endorsement deal (among others) to offer Parker a deal that would be competitive with other companies itching to have the star. But Parker opted for a reported multiyear, multi-million dollar deal with Adidas, which also sponsors the WNBA.
“It’s too late [to get picked back up],” said KG, whose teammates Sue Bird and Lauren Jackson remain Nike reps. “They [Nike] said maybe in the future.”
Seems KG’s home state team, the Indiana Fever, may be in jeopardy of being dropped, too. While ownership didn’t threaten to sell, they do want to see progress that the Fever hasn’t shown.
Indiana entered the league with the Storm in 2000. The sister franchises were part of four to enter that season when the league was at its height with 16 teams. Two of those expansion teams, Portland and Miami, have since folded and the Storm was bought by independent owners.
