Mailbag: Is Wright so wrong?

Read a long post following the Storm’s win against Sacramento basically wondering why G Tanisha Wright is ever let off the bench. The poster, Ice, pointed to Wright’s final stat line of three fouls and three turnovers in nine minutes, starting in place of F Swin Cash. Cash was pulled from the lineup because she was unable to prepare with the team due to attending a funeral in Pennsylvania.
Shootaround just concluded and I saw coach Brian Agler offering some words of encouragement to Wright before the team boarded their bus back to the hotel. He defended Wright’s play following the game, noting that the entire team had trouble against Sacramento’s defense in the opening half and I’d have to say the same. If we’re going to get after Wright, shouldn’t we point out that Sue Bird had four turnovers and Lauren Jackson had three? (They did finish with 17 points apiece, playing more minutes and staying out of foul trouble, however.)
All of the players deserve a clean slate this season since they’re under new coaching in Agler. At least that’s how I’m approaching it. True, I’m not a fan of Wright playing PG, but as she said, former coach Anne Donovan pushed her into that role and it has helped broaden her game. Rookie Kimberly Beck and Bird have years of experience in decision making with the ball. Wright basically has had three, one under a totally different system.
Wright is still a quality defender and her mental toughness is something to be envied. Think she doesn’t know y’all can’t stand her at the point? To play through that when you know your “home” crowd is cringing when you have the ball takes guts.
One thing I don’t know where Ice is coming from is Wright’s lack of “visible chemistry on or off the court with her teammates.” That’s just not true. Wright is BFF with Shyra Ely and Ashley Robinson, calling on them for their thoughts on Agler being the new coach. They text’d each other often during the offseason and hang out on the road together. Bird even visited Wright last year in Israel.
I say give Wright time, but what’s your opinion?
