Bird named to Olympic team

Storm PG Sue Bird was among the first nine players named to the U.S. Olympic squad. Four-time Olympian Lisa Leslie, three-time Olympian Katie Smith, two-time Olympians Diana Taurasi and Tina Thompson, and first-time Olympians Seimone Augustus, Sylvia Folwes, Candace Parker, and Cappie Pondexter were the others named today. The other three remaining spots will be named by July, according to committee chair Renee Brown.
“Thank you to everybody who voted and got me on the team,” said Augustus on the teleconference call for the announcement.
Taurasi added: “It’s an amazing experience to be at the biggest stage for USA basketball.”
Bird is currently practicing, so I’ll have more comments from her later.
The Americans have won five of six gold medals, but as USA Basketball president Val Ackerman acknowledged on the teleconference call, this summer will be one of the “fiercest” yet. Australia, led by captain Lauren Jackson, and Russia are the strongest contenders. But you can’t overlook China in its home country.
