Storm practice: Bird, Cash out

The Storm worked on facing Phoenix’s zone defense in a late afternoon session. The team has had their practice times booted around because of the Sonics getting prepared for the NBA draft. Monday’s session for the women didn’t end until almost 9 p.m. But vet Yolanda Griffith said everyone was focused and it was productive.
PG Sue Bird and F Swin Cash did not participate in today’s practice. Bird was out due to having an injection in her knees that is supposed to ease the onset of arthritis. “The best way to describe it is like putting oil on a rusty nail,” she said. Cash is having problems with her lower back but everyone else is healthy enough to play.
Cash and F Sheryl Swoopes had a humorous talk while shooting free throws to end practice. The newcomers were complaining about the miserable weather, wondering where is the sun. Cash arrived from Miami and packed her South Beach best, clinging to a black leather jacket to keep her warm in Seattle.
“I came here and my clothes aren’t matching,” she said of trying to layer her wardrobe.
“I meant to tell you about that,” said Swoopes of Cash not looking her usual stylish self.
“I even brought strappy sandals, if I wear those, my toes might fall off,” Cash said.
