Swoopes better

Storm F Sheryl Swoopes participated in a light practice session today after pulling herself from the starting lineup against Sacramento on Tuesday. Swoopes is experiencing swelling in her left knee, the same knee she had surgically repaired in 2001. But Swoopes hasn’t had problems with the knee since and is uncertain why the pain is occurring, except for a need to rest.
“My body is probably a little tired,” she said. “I’ve said this before, the break can’t get here soon enough for me personally.”
The WNBA will “go-dark” for the Olympics from July 28-Aug. 27. The month off will definitely work to the Storm’s advantage, giving Swoopes, 37, and center Yolanda Griffith, 38, time to recoup and the offensively slumping Swin Cash time to correct her shot before Seattle makes its final playoff push.
The team will miss star Lauren Jackson for five road games — four on the road — this month. But Swoopes believes the team can display the type of stellar defense it’s played during its four-game win streak without Jackson, possibly winning those games.
“It will be tough,” Swoopes said. “We just have to believe.”
Swoopes is uncertain whether she’ll start or play “cheerleader” for Thursday’s game against Phoenix. If unable to start, reserve guard Tanisha Wright will move into the lineup and Swoopes will be a sub for the perimeter players.
