Lauren Jackson: “[USA] have to play like that otherwise we’ll kill them.”

I thought it was strange that Storm star Lauren Jackson, captain of her Australian team, didn’t say anything about Team USA’s physical play in the Diamond Ball Tournament this week. As WNBA fans know, Jackson doesn’t mince words and she always has something to say after playing against Lisa Leslie.
It took just a day to hear from the two-time WNBA MVP and she sounded like her signature self in this story. I love that Jackson says in basketball “you’re always going to get black eyes, broken noses, and split lips,” seeing how she’s broken teammate Sue Bird’s nose once and split the lip of practice player Jimmy Quigg. I think Jackson even knocked another practice player’s tooth out last year.
Anyway, the women’s competition needed little build-up given Team USA’s loss in the World Championships and the emergence of teams like Australia and Russia. But mix the recent WNBA melee in with the Diamond Ball scuffle and voila — you’ve got the type of blood shed that will draw media. It’ll be interesting to watch, too bad we have to wait until the medal rounds in order to witness a rematch.
