Checking in on the Storm

The Storm returned to practice on Saturday after 12 days off as part of the league-wide hiatus for the Summer Games. Players bolted to places like Miami and Indianapolis to relax with family and do “nothing,” as G Tanisha Wright said.
When doors were opened to media for practice today, C Ashley Robinson immediately caught the eye because she was sporting a pink-feathered tiara. Yes, it’s her 26th birthday and “wanted to make sure everybody knows,” as reasoning for wearing the crown during free throws.
Teammate Shyra Ely’s 25th birthday was Saturday, but she didn’t get any fancy headgear. “I’m a queen anyway,” she said.
Eight players are currently practicing since PG Sue Bird (Team USA), PF Lauren Jackson (Australia), and F Kelly Santos (Brazil) are competing in the Beijing Games. SF Swin Cash is part of NBC’s broadcasting crew in New York, which is sort of an excused absence, yet coach Brian Agler said Cash will be fined for every practice she misses just as any other player would. More on that later.
According to Robinson, the sessions “are almost like basketball camp. We’re doing a lot of drills at the beginning, those fundamental drills that you need, but don’t have the time to do. And we’re working three-on-three, four-on-four, and five-on-five.”
F Sheryl Swoopes is hampered by a bruised left heel and did not participate today, but is expected to be fine when play resumes on Aug. 28. The coaching staff wanted to get her and C Yolanda Griffith some rest anyway due to nagging injuries.
Spotted at practice today was former Washington State star Kyle Weaver. He was just traded to Okalahoma City and wore Sonics gear as he shot baskets with Seattle native Spencer Hawes (Sacramento) and new teammates Jeff Green and Nick Collison.
