Checking in on Atlanta

LennoxPic.jpgSpoke briefly to Dream G Betty Lennox (right) and the former Storm star has nothing special planned for her old teammates. Atlanta could play spoiler in Seattle’s playoff plans, and Lennox said her teammates still aim to win every game they play despite their record, but having won only three games this season, there’s a bigger picture at work.
“We’re looking to come together as a team for next season,” she said.
Lennox, who’s averaging a career-best 17.2 points, is actually having more fun watching the drama unfold in the Western Conference playoff race. “LA is slowly putting people to sleep,” she said of the Sparks winning four consecutive games to be a game behind the Storm for third in the West.
Yeah, crow currently tastes a little like a sandy beach, silicone, and carbon dioxide as Los Angeles proves again its inside game of Olympians Lisa Leslie, Candace Parker, and DeLisha Milton-Jones is just too much to handle. It took a while, as expected, to come together, but the Sparks are coming on strong. San Antonio is still in first, however, and the championship is long from being decided.
Instead of tonight’s first game against Seattle, Lennox is looking forward to her return to Washington on Sept. 12 to close out the season. I hear the same of former Storm F Iziane Castro Marques, who, along with Dream C Erika De Souza, will reunite tonight with Brazilian Olympian Kelly Santos, a Storm reserve.
Storm F Camille Little began the season with Atlanta before being traded to Seattle in June.
As for Storm injuries, F Sheryl Swoopes remains a game-time decision to start due to plantar faciitis in her left heel. She did not participate in shoot-around this morning, receiving treatment instead. F Swin Cash should start in her place, if unable to go.
Swoopes’ injury was found during the Olympic break and Swoopes said then that she could deal with the pain, repeatedly wanting to get the rest of the season underway. But now that she’s questionable, you have to wonder how effective she’ll be the rest of the season when the Storm needs her most.
Storm coach Brian Agler appears content to play out the season with the current roster and welcome Lauren Jackson (ankle) back for the postseason. Yet, can the aging veterans get them there? That was the risk when opting to go with players in their twilight, allowing Lennox to be acquired in the expansion draft and trading Castro Marques. Now that plan may be backfiring.
