Checking in with Storm center Ashley Robinson

ARob2.jpgYou know the worst part about the Oklahoma City Thunder’s 2-24 record? Someone actually has to log all of those horrid games for the league. From talking to Storm center Ashley Robinson recently, she’d be happy to do it for any team.
“I actually logged a home game by myself the other day,” said a proud Robinson, who’s pictured right by the WNBA. “Well, with the help of everybody around me but I got it down pretty pat. I’ve logged two games by myself actually, so two have been recorded and sent into the league and it’s on record — my name and everything!”
Robinson is an intern for the Dallas Mavericks, her hometown NBA team. Prior to her leaving for the gig — where she tends to the talent running coffee, stats, etc. — local media bet it would take two clicks before she ended up in front of the camera. Only with an established crew, where Robinson shadows sideline reporter Emily Jones, the WNBA player is just learning all of the typical behind-the-scenes skills and enjoying it.
“It’s really interesting to see what goes into actually broadcasting these games,” said Robinson of the 13-10 Mavs. “In my dream world, [I would be in front of the camera], but I don’t think I’ll be in front of the camera anytime soon.”
As far as preparing for the upcoming season, Robinson just returned to the court for workouts. She’s kept in close contact with teammates Tanisha Wright and Shyra Ely, hoping that all can return for the upcoming 2009 season. Yet that probably won’t happen. Ely already appears to be on the chopping block as a restricted free agent. Wright has been publicly called a priority to re-sign.
Robinson, a 6-foot-4 post who averaged 10.1 minutes in 33 games last season, has a chance to return as a restricted free agent. Storm coach Brian Agler said he knows Robinson wants to be in Seattle and she could bolster the interior. Agler would like another season to develop her skills.
Dare we dream of post rotation of Lauren Jackson, Janell Burse, Yolanda Griffith, Camille Little, and Robinson? With Burse and an improved, healthy Jackson, Griffith and Robinson, the Storm could surely get past Los Angeles’ big three.
“If we do talk about Seattle, it’s like how much fun it was and wishing we could all be back, but I think we’re all realistic in not knowing if everybody is going to be back” said Robinson, who caught up with Griffith in China this month. “This [Dallas] is home so it’s pretty low-key. Everybody I’ve known since elementary school is around here. So, it’s really cool.”
On a side note, Robinson has a new pet dog named Lola, who’s smaller than Turkey so expect her to make a trip to Seattle if A-Rob returns.
“She’s already running the house,” Robinson said with a laugh.
