Oklahoma City Thunder owner Clay Bennett speaks

Bennett.jpgI crossed to the other side this week, making the trip to Portland to catchup with former Sonics G Luke Ridnour, Blazers G Brandon Roy and coach Nate McMillan. The Blazers defeated the Bucks behind C Greg Oden’s best game since returning from injury — 24 points and 15 rebounds. I was jealous to see Portland play with a supreme (on that night) post, that could block shots, grab boards, and balance the attack with Roy outside.
It was good to be back in a pro environment until the Storm returns to Seattle this spring, but McMillan and assistant coach Dean Demopoulos, who served under McMillan in Seattle, said they were disappointed they haven’t heard much about the team since its departure. Demopoulos has started to tease McMillan by calling him Mr…..because there is no more “Sonics” moniker.
“He didn’t get it at first and doesn’t like it now,” Demopoulos said.
Meanwhile owner Clay Bennett (pictured right), who relocated the franchise, spoke to his hometown newspaper about how the economy isn’t affecting the Thunder and his feelings on their woeful season. You can checkout that article here.
I saw a few familiar fans waiting for autographs outside the Blazers’ practice facility, but most, including Ridnour, can’t feel a connection to the Blazers or Thunder. Oregon State coach LaVonda Wagner asked me about life post-Sonics, which was a popular question while I was in Portland.
“It seems like the anger is settling in,” McMillan said.
Yeah, that’s about right
