UW guard Charmaine Barlow suspended for remainder of season

Barlow.jpgWashington coach Tia Jackson suspended G Charmaine Barlow (pictured right) the rest of the season for violating several team rules, one being related to academics. Barlow, a 5-foot-10 freshman, never was a major factor in the Huskies’ scheme, but did show promise.
“I need her focusing on her academics right now and remaining in shape,” Jackson told reporters Tuesday of the former Chief Sealth standout. “Unfortunately, we had to make a pretty tough decision in suspending her for the rest of the year.”
Barlow appeared in 15 games, averaging 1.6 points and 1.6 rebounds. She was originally suspended along with junior college transfer Lydia Young for the Oregon State loss on Saturday. Young was welcomed back to the lineup, joining the team on its trip today to Los Angeles, while Barlow’s suspension was extended.
Jackson said it’s one of the many distractions the team is dealing with. Another is its four-game losing streak. Opposing guards have had breakout games against the Huskies, and it doesn’t get any easier against USC and UCLA this week.
But with main contributors back in the rotation — freshman Kristi Kingma is expected to play quality minutes and reserve Sara Mosiman (ankle) is healthier — the Huskies will at least be at full force for the first time this season.
