UW freshman Kristi Kingma probably out; Liz Lay sits out loss

Husky.jpgWashington freshman Kristi Kingma appeared to re-injure the high-left ankle sprain originally suffered earlier this month. She gingerly walked off the court in the final minute of the loss to Arizona tonight and coach Tia Jackson isn’t expecting the shooter to play on Saturday against Arizona State.
“You could see how serious it was,” Jackson said. “I mean, she is in a lot of pain right now. If I had to take a guess on if she would play on Saturday, I would say — just off what I saw — no.”
Kingma missed three games due to the injury, but averaged 22 points in losses to the Los Angeles schools last week. But she spoke of the pain still lingering and being the most she’s felt in her career. Teammates advised her to “push through” because it will probably last for a while.
Meanwhile freshman Liz Lay was basically benched despite starting against the Wildcats. She played one minute in the opening half and four total.
“They were pressing and her mobility is limited,” said Jackson in reasoning not playing the 6-foot-1 forward. “It would have exposed her big-time.”
Lay is still recovering from knee surgery. She’s had spurts of impressive play, even getting men’s coach Lorenzo Romar to seek out Jackson to talk about the Oklahoma product. But Lay still needs conditioning and said her knee is only about 70 percent healthy.
