Storm re-signs center Ashley Robinson

ARob3.jpgThe Storm re-signed Ashley Robinson (pictured at right, center) today. She was a restricted free agent, so Seattle could have matched offers given to the center by other teams. Robinson wanted to return to the Storm. She is interning with the Dallas Mavericks, her hometown NBA team. We’ll see if she is available for comment, as she is preparing to serve as an assistant coach for a youth team tonight. Until then, here is the release from the Storm:
STORM RE-SIGNS CENTER ASHLEY ROBINSON
Team also adds Kelly Santos to 2009 training camp roster
SEATTLE, Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2009 — Seattle Storm head coach and director of player personnel Brian Agler announced today the re-signing 6-4 center Ashley Robinson. Per team policy, terms of the deals were not disclosed.
“We are pleased to have Ashley return to Seattle this season,” Agler said. “Ashley is a great competitor and I like the toughness she brings to our front court.”
Robinson played in 33 games for the Storm in 2008, averaging 2.2 rebounds per game. She grabbed a season-high six rebounds versus Atlanta on Sept. 12 and has pulled down a career-high 13 rebounds twice. Robinson owns career averages of 1.9 points and 2.6 rebounds per game over six seasons split between Phoenix, Chicago and Seattle.
“I’m very happy to be returning to the Storm this summer,” said Robinson. “After spending the past three seasons with my teammates and the league’s best fans, Seattle definitely feels like home.”
A former Lady Vols player, Robinson was acquired by the Storm in 2006 as part of a trade with the Chicago Sky in exchange for Cisti Greenwalt and a 2007 second-round draft pick. Robinson was selected by the Phoenix Mercury in the second round (14th overall) in the 2004 WNBA draft.
Additionally, forward Kelly Santos has been added to the Storm’s 2009 training camp roster. Santos, selected by the Detroit Shock in the fourth round (54th overall pick) of the 2001 WNBA Draft, played in 22 games for the Storm in 2008, averaging 2.1 points and 1.3 rebounds per game.
The Seattle Storm will open its 2009 WNBA schedule on Saturday, June 6 in a 1 p.m. matchup versus the Monarchs at ARCO Arena in Sacramento. The Storm returns to Seattle on Sunday, June 7 for its first KeyArena home game at 6 p.m., also against the Monarchs. The team’s June 7, 2009 home opener falls on the 10th anniversary of the city of Seattle being selected as one of four cities to receive a WNBA expansion team in 2000.
