Washington drops No. 20

Husky.jpgCan’t say it wasn’t expected, but Washington lost its 20th game of the season against No. 24 Arizona State. The eight points Washington mustered in the opening half were a new school-record low, surpassing the nine scored against California earlier this season. With Washington State defeating Arizona on Thursday, the best the Huskies can do is tie for last in the Pac-10.
Washington was predicted to finish seventh by coaches and media. An inability to shoot or defend, along with rash of injuries, led to the downward spiral. Washington is shooting 36.1 percent from the field this season while allowing opponents 43.8 percent. As teams home in on junior go-to scorer Sami Whitcomb, there’s not a consistent player for her to pass to or an inside-out threat to break up the defense. The Huskies are also missing former feisty point guard Emily Florence, who’d grab rebounds and was sturdier with the ball.
Washington coach Tia Jackson said the offseason is where Whitcomb put in a lot of work to become a more productive scorer. The coach would like to develop all of the remaining players to be solid shooters, too. Hopefully that happens because the Huskies don’t have a scorer coming in via scholarship — not planning to use the last open one available — and they’ll never win again playing like this.
