Checking in on Washington State

Husky.jpgWNBA legend Sheryl Swoopes and Tom Glasgow are on the call for the Washington-Washington State matchup tonight on Fox Sports Northwest beginning at 7 p.m. While the Husky men are playing for the Pac-10 title against the Cougs this week, the women are securing the basement stump.
Couldn’t find much word from the eastside on Washington State, but coach June Daugherty’s squad was a little better than predicted in collecting four conference wins thus far. The Cougs have lost four of their past five games, yet I suspect this will be a competitive matchup if the crowd is anything like the one that supports UW at Hec Ed. Washington State is offering $1 general admission seats in hopes of packing the house.
The local papers had a similar theme for the Huskies, wondering about the future and using assistant coach Loree Payne’s background as a barometer. You can read our story here. The UW student paper had this offering.
Washington junior co-captain Sami Whitcomb said her team is grasping onto whatever they can right now as the season closes. Tonight, that’s the 27-game win streak against the Cougars. No one wants to let that go. But in a season of unwanted record setting, it would be apropos to finish on that broken note.
