Washington Cook(ed) its Apple Cup

Kingma.jpgOK, you had to see Washington State freshman April Cook (23 points) against Washington junior Christina Rozier and freshman Kristi Kingma (13 points). If Cook’s going off in the second half to give the Cougs a one-point lead and then Kingma (pictured right) finally showing some of that fire she had in high school to respond doesn’t make you excited about the future of these two programs, I don’t know what will.
The Apple Cup (aka Basement Battle) was entertaining to view on Fox Sports Northwest. Nearly 2,000 were in attendance and you know the Cougs are wilder than the Huskies, so there were plenty of crazy fan shots for the camera to pan to. And the Huskies were able to execute their offense, which after watching the Gonzaga game again this week to refresh my memory, looks a lot better than the season opener. Of course, Washington didn’t have Mackenzie Argens playing like she is now. She finished with nine and junior co-captain Sami Whitcomb led with 18.
Washington is still last, however, allowing Washington State to finish ahead of them in Pac-10 standings since the conference entered women’s basketball in 1986.
In the other Cup competition on Friday, Storm players Sue Bird and Lauren Jackson lost 70-64 to UMMC Ekaterinburg in the finals of the Cup of Russia. Jackson, an unrestricted free agent, had 10 points for Spartak. Phoenix All-Star Diana Taurasi led with 26. Bird finished with nine points.
Taurasi and Jackson travel to Paris for the All-Star game on Sunday.
