Washington advances in Pac-10 tournament

Whitcomb.jpgYou want to ask where this Washington team has been all season, but does it really matter now? The objective is to peak at the right time so that you win and advance and the No. 10 Huskies have done just that, upsetting seventh-seeded Oregon 69-43 to earn the right to play No. 2 seed California in the second round of the Pac-10 tournament on Friday.
Although Washington is 2-0 in opening round games, they are 4-7 in the tournament overall. And the Huskies wouldn’t have had a chance if it were for junior co-captain Sami Whitcomb (pictured far right by the Associated Press) taking over from the opening tip to finish with 28 — just shy of her career-high. She nailed a career-high six three-pointers, which was just short of former Stanford star Candice Wiggins’ tournament record of eight set in March 2007.
It’s just the third time this season Washington has won back-to-back games, defeating Washington State to close the regular-season. In November, the Huskies defeated Boise State and Seattle University. And the Dawgs won both of their exhibition matchups.
We’ll have more in Friday’s newspaper.
