TV Alert: Three-point and Slam Dunk contests

Toliver.jpgMissing Maryland and Arizona State? Well, you can catch guards Kristi Toliver (pictured right by the Denver Post) and Briann January (Lewis & Clark) in tonight’s NCAA three-point contest at The Palace of Auburn Hills in Michigan. It’s a delayed broadcast from the site of the men’s Final Four, airing at 6 p.m. (PST) on ESPN, but still entertaining.
The competition is helping the participants keep their minds off unwanted exits from the NCAA women’s tournament. On Monday, Toliver’s team lost to No. 3 seed Louisville while January’s Sun Devils couldn’t upset overall No. 1 seed Connecticut on Tuesday.
“Right now I’m busy and my body needs a break,” said Toliver on a WNBA draft teleconference call Wednesday. She plans to attend the women’s Final Four in St. Louis afterward.
Ranked 14th in the nation in three-point shooting (41.6 percent through this week), Toliver will compete with Melissa Liebschwager (Furman), who leads the category (47.0). Others in the field are Angel Chan (Central Michigan), Heather Ezell (Iowa State), Karee Houlette (Georgetown), Kristi Smith (Iowa), and Abby Waner (Duke).
“I plan on giving it one, but I’m also very mindful of getting back lifting weights again, getting that strength back and getting my core right,” Toliver continued. “Then getting back in the gym and working out. Right now, this is a good break for me mentally and physically.”
As for the real action, this blog still has plenty of teams left to follow at the women’s Final Four (does that mean we’re all doing well in our brackets? Of course I am — the year I don’t play for real cash) We’ll get to the real previews later, but I wanted to share this well written article about how coach Sherri Coale has built Okalahoma. Enjoy.
UPDATE: Both Toliver and January were invited to attend the April 9 draft in New Jersey.
