Mercury statement regarding Diana Taurasi’s DUI charges

The Phoenix Mercury issued a statement today regarding star G Diana Taurasi pleading not guilty to three charges related to drunken-driving, including extreme DUI. Taurasi’s next court date is July 22.
Mercury Statement in Response to Media Inquiries
July 14, 2009
We’re aware of the recent reports in regards to the situation with Diana
Taurasi. Our organization takes these matters very seriously. We have
discussed the matter internally and determined that until all the facts are
known to us, it would be inappropriate to announce a particular course of
action.

The Mercury (10-4) face Sacramento (3-10) on Wednesday. Newly named Monarchs coach John Whisenant said he didn’t take Taurasi’s DUI charges in account when thinking about votes for reserves in the midseason classic. But Whisenant is momentarily unsure if he’ll vote because he fired Jenny Boucek on Sunday and she may have completed the form.
Taurasi, once leading the fan vote, was not voted a starter. Reserves will be announced July 20.
“We’re voting for who’s the best player, not their citizenship,” Whisenant said.
