Phoenix guard Diana Taurasi suspended two games

It’s late, but Phoenix suspended G Diana Taurasi two games for “conduct detrimental to the team.” The team could have used this tag and showed its serious stance to her drunken driving citation and subsequent charge when it was discovered initially, saving itself ridicule via the Web from fans upset at the DUI.
Taurasi is an important face for the WNBA and this is a major mistake that cannot be ignored, especially since the league constantly pitches itself as “role models.” Taurasi is even in Milk ads directed at kids. But at least a move was made, now if only the league’s Web site would recognize it.
Here’s the full release:
The Phoenix Mercury has suspended guard Diana Taurasi for two games without pay for conduct detrimental to the team. The team announced that Taurasi will begin serving her suspension in the Mercury’s next game on Saturday, July 18 versus the Detroit Shock and will conclude with its matchup against the Minnesota Lynx on July 22.
Taurasi statement on suspension:
“I am deeply sorry and embarrassed for causing this distraction for my teammates, the Phoenix Mercury, the WNBA, family and fans. While I cannot say more with regards to the specifics of the case, I do want to make sure that everyone knows how much I appreciate their support and that I’ve learned a valuable lesson. I am committed to making sure a lot of good comes from this experience.”
