Gonzaga senior Heather Bowman new WCC scoring leader

HBowman.jpgYou can declare Gonzaga senior Heather Bowman officially healthy. The forward played last season’s West Coast Conference and NCAA tournaments with bone chips in her shoulder, needing surgery.
But on Saturday against San Diego, she displayed her normal game, finishing with 21 points to become the WCC’s all-time leading scorer. Bowman, who starred at Lewis & Clark High, has 1,956 points to surpass Portland’s Martha Sheldon’s mark of 1,953 set from 1987-92.
The Zags defeated the Toreros 75-46.
“Today was a very special day,” Gonzaga coach Kelly Graves said in a released statement. “First and foremost was that we beat San Diego. Heather would be the first to tell you that the win was the most important. I am, though, extremely proud of her. I was glad she was able to break the record at home. As a local girl playing in front of our fans, that had to be an amazing feeling for her.”
Bowman (pictured right) reached the mark with 9:49 remaining in the second half when she received a pass from sophomore Katelan Redmon and scored a fast break layup. One minute later, Bowman added to her total with her final bucket of the game. The Bulldog crowd of 3,018 gave her a loud standing ovation during a media timeout.
Gonzaga (14-4, 3-0 WCC) travels to play at Pepperdine on Thursday and at Loyola Marymount on Saturday.
