And the winner is…My Pac-10 award ballot

Pac-10.jpgAbout 20 West coast media members were asked to submit ballots for Pac-10 awards this season. Our selections will be revealed on Tuesday. Considering we picked Washington to finish last and the Huskies tied for sixth in regular-season standings, I’ll understand if you snub your nose at some of my selections.
The only real discussion I could see, however, is Player of the Year and Coach of the Year. I went with Ogwumike because of her dominance in nonconference play and versatility in Pac-10 play. Appel is an equally good choice, but I think Ogwumike is the best player this year. I also considered Alexis Gray-Lawson, who carried her freshman-heavy team. She’s a great player, but Ogwumike had the more impressive overall stats.
With COY, I went with Stanford coach Tara VanDerveer. I know UCLA coach Nikki Caldwell is the sexy pick, but I decided not to fault VanDerveer for always recruiting well to sustain her hold over the Pac-10 – it is a major part of coaching. And through all of the coaching changes around VanDerveer the past few years, she’s won 10 regular-season titles and went undefeated this year when an injury-plagued roster could have easily cost her some wins.
Here’s how I viewed the other categories. Tell me your picks…
