Washington coach Tia Jackson to return

TiaJackson2.jpgWashington coach Tia Jackson, 37, will return as the Huskies’ coach next year, so tuck away those wish-list replacements some fans are known to be forming. Athletic Director Scott Woodward gave her the nod on Tuesday afternoon.
“She’s a young coach who’s learned from her mistakes and we’re solidly behind her,” said Woodward of Jackson, who is pictured right by the school.
Jackson, who signed a five-year contract, has compiled the worst three-year stretch in Washington history, rebounding from a program low 8-22 finish last year to post a 12-16 overall record headed into Thursday’s Pac-10 tournament opener against Oregon State in Los Angeles.
Woodward, who said he witnessed about four games live, said there was enough progress and intrigue in the underclassmen to warrant Jackson another year. She’s paid $180,000 annually. Woodward said budget doesn’t dictate stability and neither does postseason play, just steps in the right direction.
“Let me make it clear, I like the trend, but I don’t like where we are,” he said of the team that finished tied for sixth with Oregon in conference standings. “I think we are a top (tier) Pac-10 team. If we continue to support and give Tia what she needs, I think we can get there.”
I’ll have more in Wednesday’s newspaper.
