Washington fires assistant coach Judy Spoelstra

Spo.jpgWashington coach Tia Jackson opted not to renew the contract of top assistant Judy Spoelstra. The team would not make further comment but a spokesman did confirm that Jackson could hire a replacement.
Spoelstra was hired in 2008 after being fired as the head coach at Oregon State in 2005. She headed the Beavers for 10 seasons and was named Pac-10 Coach of the Year in 2000.
With the Huskies, Spoelstra (pictured right by UW) led the post players under Jackson’s system. A native of East Wenatchee, Spoelstra was also key in recruiting.
Jackson still has assistants Fred Applin and Loree Payne on staff. The Huskies (13-18) lost in the second round of the inaugural Women’s Basketball Invitational to complete their third season under Jackson.
