Locals keeping it real for WNBA draft

Bowman.jpgGonzaga had it’s first team meeting on Wednesday since its historic run through the NCAA tournament and there was plenty to discuss from finishing ranked 12th in the nation to assistant coach Lisa Fortier’s newborn, Marcus Williams, who made a surprise visit.
Then there was word from seniors Heather Bowman (pictured right by Gonzaga) and Vivian Frieson regarding Thursday’s WNBA draft, airing on ESPN2 at noon PST. Bowman, whose 2009 offseason was stunted by shoulder surgery, remains a projected late-second to third-round pick. Frieson attended a WNBA combine during the Final Four in San Antonio, telling Zags coach Kelly Graves she did fine.
“They’re both secretly hoping they get drafted,” Graves said Thursday morning. “But both are realistic, too. They’ve been invited to some camps and anticipate getting a shot. With Vivian, she’s so unselfish that in those kinds of settings (combine), if you’re not willing to go one-on-one, sometimes they’re are tough to stand out.”
Storm coach Brian Agler has introduced himself to Frieson and spoke briefly about the possibility of the former Garfield High star getting a try-out in Seattle’s camp. But the biggest bite seemed to come from new Tulsa coach Nolan Richardson, whose staff was seriously interested in extending a training-camp invite to Frieson if she goes undrafted.
Regardless, Bowman, a 6-foot-2 forward, and Frieson, a 6-foot post, will play overseas and try to make teams next summer.
Gonzaga is hosting its annual banquet Sunday at 11 a.m. The casual event used to draw about 200 people. After the Zags (29-5) advanced to their first Sweet 16, the banquet is sold out with 400 people expected.
