Washington joins Shootout; another assistant coach leaves?

Huskies2.jpgLots of news happening with the Washington women’s basketball team. The Huskies have joined the four-team field for the Great Alaska Shootout, played Nov. 23-27 in Anchorage.
Joining Washington in the 2010 tournament are Kent State, San Jose State and host Alaska-Anchorage. Participating in the Shootout means the team will not host its traditional Husky Classic during Thanksgiving week.
But the team will probably make the trip without assistant coach Fred Applin. Multiple sources and web sites have him accepting an assistant coaching position at East Carolina University. ECU recently hired Heather Macy as head coach in April.
Applin, a native of Roseboro, N.C., spent three seasons at Washington. He would join assistant Judy Spoelstra as the second member of coach Tia Jackson’s staff not to return. Spoelstra was fired in April and is being considered for other positions.
Lastly, Jackson received word on Tuesday that Kassia Fortier, daughter of Husky men’s assistant coach Paul Fortier, was accepted to the school and will be a walk-on for the 2010-11 season. A 5-foot-10 wing, she starred at Skyline High.
