Washington forward Liz Lay unable to play
Washington F Liz Lay (pictured right) will not play for the Huskies this season due to chronic knee injury, coach Tia Jackson announced Thursday.
Lay underwent multiple knee surgeries stemming from her senior year of high school and has not gained medical clearance. A redshirt sophomore from Oklahoma City, Lay is expected to be part of the program much like Lydia Young was last season. Young’s career also was cut short due to knee injuries.
“It’s always tough to lose a member of your family to an injury,” Jackson said in a released statement. “When one of those members is no longer able to continue her career, it makes it even tougher. Liz was an integral part of our program, but her lifetime health matters much more to us than anything she would provide on the court. We are fortunate that she will be a part of our program and get a valuable degree from the University of Washington.”
A highly recruited player out of Southeast High School in OKC, Lay played in 20 games during the 2008-09 season, where she averaged 3.3 points a game as a freshman. She only played in three games last year before having surgery to correct severe patellar tendinitis. While Lay rehabbed, she took part in a Washington drama production, “A U-Dubber Night’s Dream.”
