Storm Team Shop open Friday

SeattleStorm.pngThere are a million stories you don’t get to tell with a season like the Storm experienced last summer. One of my favorites deals with the Team Shop.
First, though, wanted to share that the spot for all championship memorabilia and more will be open Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. If you can’t fit that into your holiday shopping, here’s the full calendar of hours.
But, did you know Storm president/CEO Karen Bryant’s first dream job was cashier? The oldest of three, she made her siblings play customer at their makeshift store or bank. And not with pretend items, either. Her younger sister and brother had to match the exact items on receipts their mother brought home from the real store — otherwise return to shopping.
“She’s been playing cashier since she was like 10-years-old,” Bryant’s sister Trisha said recently. “I had one of those cute little plastic shopping carts and we’d go through and put all the food on the corner. But if we didn’t have what was on the receipt, she’d get mad. She wanted to ring it up exactly.”
It’s not surprising Bryant had the biggest smile when the team first opened the Team Shop after winning the WNBA title in September. Because Bryant’s staff is just 30 full-time people, she ended up setting up merchandise and working the register.
Only with glee.
“It’s the most fun I’ve had,” said Bryant, who said the Storm exceeded their merchandising goal by 200 percent purely on championship sales and is still adding to the profits. “It’s always been a childhood dream to work the cash register. I had this fascination with those little tin-keys. But it wasn’t as gratifying as I had hoped as a child because now it’s all scanned! You don’t get to punch in numbers…But I did get to swipe the card.
“It was nirvana. Everybody was happy, were selling stuff so we’re making money and you get to chat with the fans. But there was a letdown because it (the season) is over.”
