All-Star Swin Cash re-signs with Storm

Cash3.jpgThree-time WNBA champion Swin Cash re-signed with the Storm, giving the team a solid shot at defending its 2010 title. Cash, a 6-foot-1 forward, averaged 16.1 points and 4.9 rebounds during the Storm’s undefeated playoff run, shooting a career-best 50 percent from three-point range.
Storm coach Brian Agler’s ability to ink Cash ensures Seattle will retain its starting lineup, which has played together the past three seasons. Agler, who’s director of player personnel, re-signed restricted free agent Camille Little in February.
Cash, a nine-year veteran, signed a multiyear deal believed to be worth the WNBA maximum ($103,500). Agler said recently that he expects Cash to retire in a Storm uniform.
But the process wasn’t without drama. Free agency opened Feb. 1 and Cash (pictured right by the Seattle Times) wasn’t “cored,” meaning she was free to negotiate with any WNBA team. Agler remained confident he’d keep his star, yet Cash repeatedly stated she was weighing her options. When she lost a family member and agreed to plan her mother’s wedding, her return became more cloudy because the player considered moving closer to her Pennsylvania home base.
Twitter made a mess of the situation before the deal was announced on Tuesday. Cash made two cryptic tweets that followers interpreted as her departure.

Cash is currently in China, her team winning Game 1 of its opening round playoff series. She was unavailable to comment, yet did quell tension as the signing was officially announced by the Storm.

“I am honored to continue playing in front of the WNBA’s best fans,” Cash said in a press release. “I’m blessed to have wonderful teammates, committed coaches and a supportive organization in Seattle. I look forward to the 2011 season and beyond.”
Agler still needs to find replacements for standout reserves Svetlana Abrosimova and Jana Vesela, who are expected to miss this summer due to national team obligations. Abrosimova could return late, but their absence hurts depth. Agler signed Australians Erin Phillips (PG) and Belinda Snell (F) to training camp contracts.
Given other moves across the Western Conference, depth will be key. Minnesota will be healthy, has two lottery draft picks, and signed solid veteran Taj McWilliams-Franklin. Phoenix got stronger with the additions of Marie Ferdinand Harris and Nakia Sanford while Los Angeles returns a healthy Candace Parker, the 2008 MVP.
“Swin Cash is a stellar representative of this franchise both on and off the court,” said Karen Bryant, the Storm’s president and CEO, via press release. “She was an integral part of last season’s record-breaking Storm team and we are thrilled that she will continue her professional career in Seattle.”
Fans on Twitter didn’t hide their enthusiasm when told they could exhale because their third mega star, joining the ranks of three-time MVP Lauren Jackson and All-Star Sue Bird, was back.
