Source: Katie Smith to Seattle for Jasmine Thomas, 2012 pick

SeattleStorm.pngUPDATE: The deal was announced as I posted. It’s a three-team swap with veteran Washington PG Katie Smith and C Jacinta Monroe landing in Seattle, along with Indiana’s second-round pick in the 2012 draft. Australian PG Erin Phillips, who was signed to Seattle’s training camp roster, goes to Indiana with the Storm’s third-round pick in 2012. Washington receives Seattle’s first-round draft pick in PG Jasmine Thomas, Seattle’s first-round and Indiana’s third-round pick in the 2012 draft.
I just spoke with Katie Smith, who was excited about the deal being finalized. She plans to make her first trip to Seattle next week then make plans to drive from Ohio with Logan, her 75-pound goldendoodle, to report on-time for camp May 15.
I’ll have more in Saturday’s newspaper.
*******************************************************************
According to a source with knowledge of league dealings, the Washington Mystics have agreed to a sign-and-trade deal for veteran PG Katie Smith to play in Seattle as desired. The deal supposedly ships Smith and 2010 rookie Jacinta Monroe to the defending champion Storm for Jasmine Thomas, the team’s first-round draft pick, and a 2012 first-round selection.
It isn’t confirmed, but in a conversation with another knowledgeable source earlier this month, a trade was in the works. Negotiations were slow, however, because the salaries had to fit under Seattle’s cap. Plus Mystics coach/general manager Trudi Lacey wasn’t willing to allow Smith to depart for nothing.
I’ll keep you posted.
