Washington signs former Nebraska’s Kellie McCann-Smith

Huskies2.jpgFirst-year Washington coach Kevin McGuff nabbed his first player, signing Nebraska transfer Kellie McCann-Smith. A 5-foot-9 freshman guard from Asotin, she appeared in 22 games before missing the final nine due to a back injury. She averaged 3.0 points and 1.1 rebounds.
McCann-Smith, who starred at Clarkston High, wanted to move closer to home, making Washington an easy sell given the woes at Washington State and lack of space on Gonzaga’s roster. Eligible for the 2012-13 season, she’s expected to be an offensive threat and provide some veteran leadership for a possible class of five freshmen.
Sources confirmed the transfer on Wednesday. An official announcement could be made Thursday.
