Former Washington coach Tia Jackson joins Rutgers

TiaJackson2.jpgIt didn’t take long for former Washington coach Tia Jackson to find employment after being forced to resign in March. The former Iowa star will join legendary coach C. Vivian Stringer’s staff as an assistant at Rutgers. Stringer was Jackson’s college coach and huge supporter as she struggled in her first head coaching position at UW.
Jackson never compiled a winning season, leaving Washington with a 45-75 record. Her tenure was marred by player transfers and the inability to keep top recruits in-state, although the Huskies’ in-coming class are stars from the area.
A Maryland native, Jackson signed a five-year contract worth $280,000 guaranteed at Washington. She was to be paid the $180,000 base salary for the final year of her contract.
At Rutgers, Jackson replaces Carlene Mitchell, who left the program in May to become head coach at UC Santa Barbara. Former Xavier coach Kevin McGuff replaced Jackson at Washington, becoming the first male coach in the program’s 37-year history.
“I began my most competitive basketball career playing for Coach Stringer at Iowa,” Jackson said in a released statement. “I have believed in her, her vision, her commitment to this sport, and her dedication to her players for over 20 years now. And during this time, she has grown from being my coach to becoming one of my greatest mentors. It gives me the greatest pleasure to be able to give back to someone who has given so much to me over the years.”
