Storm signs Polish center Ewelina Kobryn

EKobryn.jpgStorm coach Brian Agler said he wouldn’t make moves in a “panic state,” but jumped quick at the opportunity to nab Polish C Ewelina Kobryn, whose national team was recently eliminated by France 58-54 from EuroBasket play. The early exit means the 29-year-old can join a WNBA team after being cut by the New York Liberty on June 1.
Assuming Kobryn (pictured right) is able to obtain a visa and pass a physical, she’d join the Storm in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday during its White House visit. The Storm will be honored by President Barack Obama for winning the 2010 championship then depart on a three-game road trip against Connecticut (July 1), Washington (July 3) and Indiana (July 5).
Kobryn, who’s 6 foot 3, was signed after the Storm cut rookie Ify Ibekwe on Sunday. The veteran post is basically insurance for the shortened rotation left by three-time MVP Lauren Jackson’s hip injury. Jackson will not travel this week and needs at least three weeks to heal a labral tear in her left hip.
“We had to give ourselves some support in the post in case Lauren wouldn’t be back,” said Agler, who’s also director of player personnel. Jackson will be re-evaluated after the three-week span and if not healed a discussion regarding surgery will take place.
Then rehabilitation is about 12-weeks. But Storm president and CEO Karen Bryant was told labral injuries are common in athletes and rest usually heals the area.
“I’ve watched (Kobryn) play in the EuroLeague Final Four two years ago,” Agler said. “So we do have some background on her and we’ve watched some film on her. We feel like she could potentially come in her and be a good player for us at some point. It could be this year or it could be next year.
“This isn’t a short-term, quick-fix thing. This is something where we feel we’re getting a good player who could be on our roster for a period a time.”
Kobryn averaged 14.7 point and 7.7 boards in six EuroBasket games for Poland. She’s a former teammate of former Storm C Janell Burse on the Wisla Can-Pack squad.
Agler has also had discussions with rookie Krystal Thomas about possibly seeing more playing time to help bolster the post rotation. C Ashley Robinson has also been contributing well to the team inside.
F Le’coe Willingham will remain the starter in Jackson’s absence.
