UWTV Alert…and other news from Washington practice

Huskies2.jpgWashington released its eight-game schedule to air women’s basketball on UWTV Channel 27 (Comcast). The Huskies telecast will debut Dec. 20 against Southern University at Hec Ed.
The complete schedule is below. The station hasn’t confirmed its on-air talent for the 2011-12 season. Former UW G Sara Mosiman and play-by-play announcer Dan Giuliani were on the call last season.
UW will also air nationally on ROOT Sports when it hosts cross-state rival Washington State on Feb. 26 at Hec Ed. The 8 p.m. matchup versus Oregon State on Feb. 11 is another national possibility, but the station hasn’t cemented that broadcast.
The Huskies held an open practice on Tuesday with players expressing eagerness to begin the 2011-12 season. UW has a new look, beginning with coach Kevin McGuff.
The program, which hasn’t had a winning record since 2007, returns three starters, but McGuff said he’s uncertain of a rotation. “We’ve been really competitive, so there’s a lot of people vying for minutes. Before it’s all said and done, we’ll have a deep team and because of that, even if we do have a good starting lineup, I wouldn’t be shocked if it kind of changed through the year,” McGuff said.
First the Huskies have to get healthy, which seems to be an annual plight. Aside from G Kristi Kingma (knee) and Talia Walton (knee), UW is currently without senior F Mollie Williams (concussion) and sophomore G Ashley Moore, who sprained her right knee in practice on Friday.
New additions in F Beatrice Carta, a freshman from Italy, and G Deborah Meeks, a freshman from Michigan, are also out until at least January due to knee injuries. McGuff views both players as quality recruits in the future, however, so the early setback isn’t a concern to him.
Those able to play Tuesday competed in a five-on-five scrimmage against male practice players and themselves. McGuff told the gathering watching the evening session there will be more opportunities to see the team train.
McGuff couldn’t comment, but Washington received its third verbal commitment in Seattle Christian senior Katie Collier. She made the announcement on Tuesday, but is currently battling acute promyelocytic leukemia. The official signing period begins Nov. 9.
