TV Alert: Undefeated Colorado versus Denver on ROOT

Chucky.jpgNew Pac-12 member Colorado continues its best start in nearly a decade with an in-state matchup against Denver on ROOT Sport at 6 p.m. PST on Thursday. The Buffaloes, the sole remaining undefeated team in the conference, are 7-0 to open the season for the first time since 1993-94 when the team advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 with an overall 27-5 record.
These Buffs weren’t predicted to do that well this year. In a preseason poll, Pac-12 coaches picked Colorado to finish 11th. The newcomers are off to a hot nonconference start partly because of soft schedule that includes its current six-game homestand. The Buffaloes did defeat Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on the road, something Washington couldn’t do in the WBI tournament in 2010. And CU handed a competitive Wisconsin team a 58-48 loss at Coors Events Center. The Badgers also lost 69-51 at home to Washington State in November.
The Buffaloes lead the Pac-12 in free-throw percentage (71.9) and rank third in rebounding defense (32.4) and scoring margin (+17.3). They’re fourth in field-goal percentage defense (33.5).
But a reason to really tune-in is junior guard Chucky Jeffery. She’s the reigning conference Player of the Week after averaging 28 points on 64.5 percent shooting from the field and 11 boards in wins over San Francisco and Idaho. Jeffery, who’s 5-foot-10, has posted three consecutive double-doubles.
Oh, and Denver (6-2) is the same team that handed Colorado its first loss of the season last year. The Pioneers won 70-69 at Magness Arena.
Washington (5-2) will host Colorado on Jan. 5, its only matchup against the new Pac-12 foe. The Huskies, which are off to their best start since 2005, are 2-6 all-time against Colorado. The schools last played in 2004, UW losing 76-74 in overtime at Edmundson Pavilion.
