Women’s hoops field finalized for London Olympic Games

LondonOly.jpgMembers of the USA women’s basketball team are still healing from injuries or focusing on WNBA games, but the London Olympics are approaching fast. The women’s basketball field was finalized in Turkey on Sunday, Canada, Croatia, Czech Republic, France and Turkey joining the U.S., Angola, China, Australia, Brazil, Russia and host Great Britain in the round-robin tournament beginning July 28.
The preliminary round runs July 28-Aug. 5. The top four teams from each preliminary round group will advance to the Aug. 7 quarterfinals, with the winners playing in the semifinals on Aug. 9 and the medal games on Aug. 11.
The U.S. women open preliminary round play on July 28 at 8:45 a.m. PDT against Croatia, followed by a contest against Angola on July 30 at 2:15 p.m. PDT. The USA will face Turkey on Aug. 1 and Czech Republic on Aug. 3, and both of those games tip-off at 2:15 p.m. PDT. The United States will close preliminary round play against China on Aug. 5 at 8:45 a.m. PDT.

The Storm will be represented by American PG Sue Bird, Aussie posts Lauren Jackson. Abby Bishop, and Suzy Batkovic, and Czech F Jana Vesela. Australian G Belinda Snell did play for Seattle in 2011, but is a free agent whose rights aren’t reserved by the team.
