A Happy Fourth of July: Former Storm guard Adia Barnes weds

CoppaBarnes.jpgWashington assistant coach Adia Barnes, who was a member of the Storm’s 2004 championship team, will wed Salvo Coppa on Wednesday. The ceremony will take place aboard the boat of Storm owners Lisa Brummel and Celeste Keaton.
Coppa and Barnes met in his native Italy where Barnes was still playing basketball and her fiance coached. After a courtship that seemingly traipsed the globe, the couple was finally able to set a date when Seattle became a home base for Barnes. She accepted the UW position last year and is in her sixth season as the color commentator for the Storm.
Barnes still planned two weddings, however. Wednesday’s is a small, intimate affair with All-Star Sue Bird as part of the bridal party. The couple will have another wedding in September where 75 people are expected to attend. That ceremony is in Mercer Island.
Coppa has been volunteer coaching for the Storm. He recently led the Thailand Senior National Team to three tournament titles, the first in Jakarta. Now living in Seattle, Coppa is unsure whether he’ll return to Thailand or Italy to continue his coaching career.
“He helps us in practice and our scouting reports and does his own evaluation of when we play,” said Storm coach and general manager Brian Agler of Coppa, who doesn’t travel unless he pays his own way. “We’ll have him work with individual players on shooting and getting reps. He’s spent time with Eva (Kobryn) and has been a good addition, there’s no question.”
Last season Agler had the benefit of legendary coach Debbie Ryan as a volunteer assistant coach.
