Washington guard Kellie McCann-Smith leaves basketball program
Washington announced Thursday morning G Kellie McCann-Smith left the program for personal reasons. The Asotin, Wash. native missed the first quarter of school for the same personal reason. When asked upon her return, McCann-Smith said she’d be more comfortable talking about her absence after the basketball season.
It is unknown whether McCann-Smith is still enrolled at UW. She transferred from Nebraska last year and granted immediate playing eligibility by the NCAA because the transfer was made to help in caring for her ill father. The family made frequent trips to see her play in Seattle. McCann-Smith appeared in 34 games in 2011-12, starting three and averaging 4.0 points.
McCann-Smith didn’t play in any games this season but did practice with the team. She was held out of games due to lack of conditioning due to her absence, according to UW coach Kevin McGuff. He released a statement Thursday.
“Kellie is a terrific young woman and I wish her all the best. This time away from college athletics is the best thing for her and her family.”
UW (12-5, 4-2 Pac-12) hosts Oregon State (9-9, 3-3) on Friday at 6pm at Alaska Airlines Arena.
